AIDEX ’91 Protest Speech
Over 1,000 protestors blockaded the AIDEX weapons industry expo in Canberra in November 1991. The protests were so effective it was two decades before a similar arms industry event was attempted in Australia again. This recording from Melbourne’s community radio 3CR features Tanya’s speech on the Saturday of the protests, two days before the arms fair was scheduled to begin.
There’s a terrific account of the AIDEX protests by Iain McIntyre at the Commons Social Change Library. This YouTube compilation of raw footage is also great. From about 14:40 you can listen in to a bit of an argument on the picket line, where Tanya sums up the reasons to maintain the blockade where it is.
