Pincher Nyurrmiari

Please note – this recording includes the voice of a person who has died.

The Wave Hill Walk-Off was one of the most famous strikes in the history of this country, and was a turning point in the struggle for Aboriginal Land Rights. Pincher Nyurrmiari was one of the leaders at the strike camp at Daguragu, in the Northern Territory.

Tanya recorded this statement by Pincher in July 1981. Pincher talks about the history of cattle station owners shooting Aboriginal people to take their land for cattle, including Wave Hill and other stations. He describes how Aboriginal people were treated 'like a dog' by station managers. Pincher discusses the strike, the importance of Daguragu, and the problem of too many white people trying to take over.

Tanya lived at Daguragu from 1974 to 1977: her account can be found on this website
